Q: What is an e-Cigarette/Personal Vaporiser?
An e-Cigarette (e-Cig) or Personal Vapouriser (PV) is a battery operated device that uses a wick and heating coil (Atomiser) to vapourise a solution so that it can be inhaled. People who use these devices are known as "Vapers".

Q: What is an Atomizer?
The e-Liquid is vapourised via a wick and heating coil. This is collectively known as an atomizer. All tanks have an atomizer which is either fixed or replaceable.

Each atomizer has a specific operating range measured in Volts/Watts. Using settings outside this range will result in poor performance when lower,  and  burning/failure when higher.

When installing a new atomiser it is essential that you allow enough time for the liquid to penetrate before first use. Failure to do so will result in scorching the wicking material which will permanently impair performance, flavour, and reduce the lifespan of the coil. It may also impart a burnt taste/odour to the vapour.

Q: What are the numbers on the side of my coil head?
These refer to the coils Resistance and operating range. The Atomizer coil is simply a piece of wire made of metal alloy. This wire has an electrical resistance measured in Ohms (Ω).

The operating range is specified in Volts/Watts and the device should be set accordingly. Using settings outside this range will result in poor performance when lower, and burning/failure when higher.

Q: How long does the Atomiser Coil last?
It will depend on the battery voltage and to some degree on the e-Liquid. It may be a week, a month and anywhere in between, dependent on usage.

Regardless, it will become less effective as time goes by so change it when you feel it is not performing properly.

A coil that produces very little vapour or imparts a burnt flavour/odour has reached the end of its life and should be replaced.

Q: What kind of battery are they?
The batteries are rechargeable Li-Ion technology, the same as that used in laptops and mobile phones. Most devices have a non-replaceable battery while others can be swapped-out when required.

CAUTION! Batteries are electro-chemical devices and should be treated with respect. If you suspect that your battery is damaged do not use it. If you drop your battery, pay close attention to its behaviour afterwards.

If your battery behaves erratically eg switches itself on/off, LED blinks regardless of charge, or feels unusually hot during use or charging etc., STOP using it immediately. DO NOT USE IT AGAIN.

Please read the Rules below concerning Safety.

Q: How long does a battery take to charge?
Charging time depends on the battery capacity and its state of discharge. With the standard 420mA charger an eGo 650mAh battery can take 2 hours, and 1300mAh   can take more than 3.5 hours. Some Mods with integral batteries such as the Eleaf iStick 50W (4400mAh) can be charged at 1A (1000mA) in about 4hrs.

Devices which use replaceable batteries do not always allow charging through the device so a suitable external charger may be required.

All batteries lose capacity over time so they take less time to charge and will need recharging sooner. At some point they will no longer hold enough useful charge and will need to be replaced. This usually occurs sometime between the 300-500th charge cycle.

Q: How long does a battery charge last?
It will depend on how often you use it, the battery capacity, voltage, & resistance of the coil. Only through using it will you gain some idea of how long it will last but this will vary day to day.

If you are an occassional/light vaper, then a 650mAh eGo battery with a 1.8Ω coil should last about 1-2 days, while a heavy vaper using a 4000mAh battery mod and subohm coils at high wattage may need to recharge the battery every day.

If you have a variable voltage/wattage device, higher settings use more power than lower ones.

Q: What are the Safety Guidelines regarding Batteries & Chargers?
The most important thing to remember is that minimising the risk of fire and injury should be your main concern, not convenience.

In order to take maximum preventative measures please follow these simple Rules.

Be mindful of where you charge the device/battery and choose a place that, should it fail, there is a lesser risk of fire and personal injury eg a kitchen counter rather than next to a bed, sofa, curtains or soft furnishings etc.

Be aware that if you use a PC/TV USB port to charge your battery and it fails, the damage may not be limited to the battery/charger and present a greater risk of fire. We recommend using a dedicated USB mains adapter.

Only use batteries/chargers specifically designed for your device. Subohm & high power devices require high discharge batteries using IMR chemistry.

Do not use your charger/battery if it is damaged.

Clean the battery contacts regularly and before charging.

Never leave your battery charging unattended ie don't leave the house or charge it out of sight in an unoccupied room.

Never leave it charging overnight while you're sleeping.

Always disconnect you battery & charger when the charging cycle is completed.

If your Battery/Device gets unusually hot during use/charging STOP using it immediately. If the batteries can be removed from the device then do so. Have the device/batteries checked before continuing with use.

If your device/battery presents signs of danger such as getting extremely hot, hissing, strange odour, fumes or smoke then place the device/batteries outside, away from people, pets and flammable materials and leave it for at least 2 hours to ensure it has cooled and is safe to approach. DO NOT USE THE DEVICE/BATTERIES AGAIN UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN CHECKED BY THE SUPPLIER/MANUFACTURER.

If your battery behaves erratically eg turns On/Off, LED blinks regardless of charge etc then do not use it. This could indicate a fault.

● Do NOT crush, puncture, short circuit, immerse in liquids, disassemble or expose batteries to high temperatures.

Dispose of batteries responsibly by taking them to a recycling point. Cover the contacts with sellotape to avoid short circuits.

Q: How do I maintain my Battery/Atomiser?
Due to mechanical wear the threads of the battery/tank accumulate fine metal particles which combine with leaked e-Liquid to produce an oily residue.

While this "oil" may feel slippy it acts as a cutting-grease that causes more wear and being conductive could lead to an electrical short especially when charging.

You must clean away this residue to prolong the life of the threads on your battery/tank and prevent electrical shorting.

Simply use a cotton bud/tissue inserted into the recess and turn the battery/tank as you would when unscrewing the tank, this will bring debris out instead of pushing it further down.

If there is anything that this method doesn't budge then use a wood/plastic toothpick or similar to dislodge it while turning the battery as above. You may need to blow into the recess to eject it (close your eyes when doing so).

Atomiser tanks such as MT3/EVOD have air-intakes around the base (2-3 tiny holes) that may become clogged and reduce the airflow. Use a pin to push the blockage out.

Q: What is e-Liquid and is it Safe?
e-Liquid is a solution made of Vegetable  Glycerin (VG) and/or Monopropylene Glycol (PG) that contains a flavour and Nicotine.

They are available in several Nicotine strengths typically between 3mg/ml (0.3%) and 24mg/ml (2.4%). Available flavour groups include Tobacco, Fruits, Desserts, Confectionery and Drinks.

Unlike cigarette smoke, the eliquid vapour does not contain the many noxious and toxic chemicals created by burning tobacco providing it is not vapourised  at excessive temperatures (See "What is a Dry hit?").

Research has shown that several compounds are present at very low levels which pose no risk providing the device is functioning properly and used within the limits of its operating range.

However, if a high dose of Nicotine is ingested it can cause illness. Please see below for further information.

The NHS assessed the safety of vapourisers and found them to be 95% safer than smoking Tobacco.

Q: Is Nicotine Addictive/Dangerous?
Is Nicotine addictive?
While it is true that Nicotine is responsible for the addictive nature of smoking it is not responsible for the deleterious effects of smoking eg Cancer, heart attack and stroke.

Recent research (Harvard Study) has also suggested that other chemical additives in cigarettes enhance the effects of Nicotine, which by itself has poor reinforcing effects.

Is Nicotine dangerous?
Perhaps the question should be "Can Nicotine be dangerous?". As with any substance the short answer must be "Yes". However, this is dependent on the quantity ingested. NRT products contain Nicotine and are not generally considered dangerous, hence they are available without prescription.

However, a 10ml bottle of 24mg/ml e-Liquid contains 240mg of Nicotine, 5x that of a 12 pack of 4mg gum. Nicotine is emetic (causes vomiting) which makes it difficult to ingest.

There are many products in your home that are considered dangerous but others that, for children, are not obvious. Iron tablets and Fluoride Toothpastes can cause children serious health issues and fatality yet are not generally noted for being dangerous.

WARNING! Nicotine can be poisonous. Do not use Nicotine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have diabetes or any history of heart disease, high blood pressure or a vascular condition seek medical advice before use.

Always keep it in a safe place and out of the sight & reach of children and animals, especially amphibious and aquatic species.

Even if you use Zero Nicotine e-Liquid be aware that some animals are unable to metabolise PG and it could cause them harm.

As said, many household products can be poisonous, even the not so obvious ones, so it is important that you maintain vigilance, especially if you have children.

Prepare yourself for such a scenario and have a plan of action. Doing so will ensure that treatment is given at the earliest opportunity.

INGESTION
Please familiarise yourself with the signs and symptoms of Nicotine poisoning which include; Nausea, Vomiting, Stomach cramps, Sweating, Increased Heart Rate, Headache, Dizziness and Shaking (Tremors).

If you suspect someone is showing signs of poisoning then seek Medical Advice eg call the NHS Helpline on 111.

If possible, have them drink a cup (child=half cup) of milk or water but do not persist if vomiting occurs.

If they are unconscious then administer First Aid and call 999. Present the packaging and/or container to the Doctor.

SKIN CONTACT
In the case of contact with skin, wash the area with soap and water. If a large amount of e-Liquid is involved then wash as above for 15mins. Check for symptoms of poisoning and seek advice if necessary.

Despite the negative effects Nicotine can cause it is also being researched for its therapeutic value. There is an interesting article ("Is Everything We Know About Nicotine Wrong?") you may like to read.

Q: What is a Dry Hit?
The term "Dry hit" refers to a situation when there is insufficent liquid in the wick causing the coil to reach excessive temperatures. This results in a burnt, acrid tasting vapour that is extremely unpleasant and choking.

This can be caused by any combination of the following:-
Firstly, letting the tank run empty will of course mean there is no liquid.
Second, using a higher voltage/wattage than that specified for the coil.
Third, using a high viscosity liquid unsuitable for the tank/atomiser.
Fourth, using a coil beyond its normal lifespan.

Once a coil has experienced a dry hit, it is permanently impaired and may not function as well as expected. It may also impart a burnt taste to the vapour.

Q: How do I dispose of unwanted e-liquid?
Do NOT dispose of e-liquid down the sink etc. The best practice is to use an absorptive material such as used coffee grounds, sawdust, cat litter, paper towel etc.

Place the absorptive material into a plastic bag and pour in the e-liquid. Tie the bag and place it in the bin.

Q: What is the Cigarette equivalence of e-liquid?
This is difficult to answer, it's an "Apples & Oranges" thing. Some will quote an equivalence based on Nicotine content. However, not all the Nicotine in e-Liquid or a cigarette is absorbed.

Q: What is a Dual/Tri/Quad coil?
Instead of a single wick/coil some designs have more. As such each coil can  vapourise additional liquid providing a fuller vape. These are often the 'weapon of choice' for Cloud Chasers.

Not all multiple coil atomizers employ serparate coils, they are simply a single head consisting of 2 or more wires wound in parallel. This is done to increase the thermal mass which usually allows for a wider operating range and higher wattage.

Q: Atomizers: Disposable (Fixed) versus Replaceable?
Disposable atomizers are designed to be used until the wick/coil is no longer performing satisfactorily at which point the entire tank is thrown. Other designs have a wick/coil head that can be replaced so that the tank can be reused.

Q: What is RBA/RDA/RTA?
These terms refer to tanks with rebuildable (DIY) atomizers. These allow the user to choose their own coil/wicking materials and build a device that suits their needs.

Several manufacturers have designed tank systems that can utilise premade coil heads and/or a rebuildable deck.

Q: What is a Mod?
The term Mod was originally used to describe modified or self-build devices. It is now also used to describe factory-built devices that provide various features.

A Mod may use replaceable batteries, can be purely mechanical or use electronics to provide a display and voltage functions.

Q: What is Sub-ohm Vaping (SOV)?
Sub-Ohm refers to an overall coil resistance below 1.0Ω. Please note that SOV requires equipment designed to handle higher current loads.

CAUTION! Do not attempt to use subohm coils with standard devices/batteries as it may lead to catastrophic failure.
Q: What is Temperature Control (TC)?
Most devices are designed to output a steady voltage which passes through the coil creating heat. However there are many factors involved and it is impossible for these devices to know or control the actual temperature of the coil.

TC devices can use the known properties of specific metals in relation to their resistance to alter the voltage to maintain a predetermined coil temperature.

The main reason for doing this is to ensure that the wicking material, coil and eliquid are not subjected to temperatures that would lead to the creation of hazardous by-products in the vapour.

Currently TC coils are available in Nickel, Titanium and Stainless Steel.

Q: What is a high drain IMR battery?
This type of battery employs a "safer" chemistry that is more stable in high-discharge conditions than other Li-Ion types. They are therefore better suited for use in sub-ohm, high wattage devices.

The battery will be rated for a maximum continuous discharge rate measured in Amps. This rate must be higher than the devices rated maximum current.

CAUTION! Failure to use correctly rated batteries suitable for your device may lead to catastrophic failure.

 Q: What is Cloud Chasing?
There are many Vapers for whom the simple act of acquiring a dose of Nicotine is not enough. Their passion lies in creating the biggest, thickest, billowing clouds.

Is has become a tournament event involving Vapers from all over the World. Some have built mods and atomizers specifically for this task. The juices are usually Nicotine free to avoid overdose.
